Post Graduate Department of Commerce and Management studies started functioning at the inception of the college in 1972, with pre-university course in commerce, catering to the needs of almost the one third of the total student strength of the college. The department presently offers two UG programs (B.Com and BBA) with specialization in finance and one PG program (M.Com) with specialization in marketing. The department earns the status of a prominent center for teaching and learning in business and management education in the area.

The department strives to attain the highest standards in teaching by maintaining a dynamic academic community. The department presently owns a full-fledged faculty base of thirteen permanent teachers who guide and teach students during and after working hours of the college. A well-equipped library, ICT supported classrooms and advanced computer lab, are among the facilities available to the students. The department conducts seminars, workshops and lectures by experts in various fields on a regular basis to blend industry practices with academics. The department offers free coaching for UGC NET-JRF, CAT/MAT and for other competitive examinations to the students in and outside the college.

The members of the faculty are actively involved in research and extension activities. Most of them are Trainers/visiting faculty of Industrial Training Centers (like DIC) and other institutions of national importance (like ICAI, IGNOU, KAU etc...). Some of the faculty regularly publishes articles/research papers in International/National journals.

7) Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students

Tutorial sessions are held by tutors, which in other way benefitted the students by way of their personality and soft skill development. Personal counseling and guiding students also conducted after class hours.. The department has been offering enrichment courses to students free of cost on the topics covering intelligence and reasoning, Quantitative aptitude, communication skills , General English, General and Commercial awareness etc. These programs are much helpful to the students who are preparing for CAT, MAT and other national level management aptitude tests and also for various national and state level competitive examinations.

A forum of teachers and students titled as “Commerce Forum” is constituted in the department to enrich students by improving their communication and soft skills. The forum also takes initiatives to design programmes for students by giving due thrust to confidence building, time management , interview tips, positive thinking etc.

P.G Department of commerce is elevated to Research centre in the previous year .Dr. T. G. Saji of the department published several articles a various national and international journals and he is the research guide of Calicut university.

23) Plan of action of the department for the next year:

  • The department has taken initiative to organize 10 Self Help Groups in the local area. Out of these 12 SHGs are still functioning properly. Department gives timely evaluations and provide guidance to them.
  • Training and consultancy programs to women with special focus to income generating activities are conducted by the department for the social and economic empowerment of the local women
  • Department has taken special efforts to assist those who apply for competitive examinations through ‘online’ by providing computer and internet facilities. The faculties extend needed technical help and advice in this regard.
  • The department is maintaining an Investment cell which renders required advice and consultancies to persons who are looking for investment plans which most fitted to their income and tax status.
  • Educational consultancy services are given to the students in and outside the college who are in pursuit of higher education in their career path.
  • Legal aid consultancy services are given to the public with the assistance of Old Students who are associated with judicial system of the country.
  • The department assists the public by guiding them in the matter of procedures and formalities they should follow while they approach Government/public servant’s offices.
  • The department is rendering consultancy services to academic researchers in different phases of their research work. Main services in this regard include designing of questionnaire, sampling frame and statistical plans. The researchers are also helped to get their data processed through statistical/time series soft wares like SPSS, Eviews, Gretl etc.
